At South Sound Wood, it all starts with a tree.
We understand that trees grown in built environments may need to be removed if they pose a hazard to buildings and people. Our goal is to turn these salvaged logs into something durable, useful, and beautiful.
We partner with local arborists and homeowners to salvage logs after the tree is taken down. We process these logs at our wood site in southeast Olympia. Our wood inventory is full of species local to the region.
We use our Woodland Mills and Granberg Alaskan sawmills to turn the salvaged log into useable slabs. We can mill logs up to 68” wide. We flatten and kiln dry our wood slabs to ensure stability for years to come.
We have a full-service shop where we transform the wood using a blend of traditional joinery techniques and contemporary designs. We finish each piece to highlight the character of the wood and achieve our client’s vision.
Our bespoke wood furniture continues to reflect its Pacific Northwest roots throughout our region and across the country.
Brody Coval is the owner and lead woodworker at South Sound Wood. With a background in forestry and arboriculture, he specializes in finding and using the right wood combinations and grain patterns to let the wood tell the story. He has over ten years of experience sawmilling and creating custom wood furniture pieces.
Brody believes in growing this work directly through the community. He is a member of the Tumwater Tree Board, where he advocates for improvements to our local urban forests and wood supply network.
